Biology vocab

TermDefinition
Compound Light Microscope An instrument that magnifies small objects so that they can be seen easily by using two or more lenses, one lens to magnify the object and the other lens to magnify the first lens's image.
Eyepiece (Ocular lens) Magnifies the image, usually 10 times.
Objective Lens Located directly above the specimen. Enlarges the image of the specimen.
Stage A platform that supports a slide holding the specimen.
Light Source A light bulb that provides light for viewing the image. Can be a light reflected with a mirror or an incandescent light from a small lamp.
Magnification The increase of an object's apparent size by using lenses or mirrors.
Nosepiece The structure that holds the set of objective lens, rotates these lenses into place above the specimen.
Resolution In microscopes, the ability to form images with fine detail.
Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) A microscope that produces an enlarged, three-dimensional image of an object by using a beam of electrons rather than light.
Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) Transmits a beam of electrons through a very thinly sliced specimen. Enlarges images through magnetic lenses and focuses it onto a screen or photographic plate
Metric System A decimal system and thus based on the powers of 10.
Base Unit One of the fundamental units of measurement that describes length, mass, time, and other quantities and from which other units are derived.
