N112 - Angiotension II Receptor Blockers for test 1

| Action | blocks the action of angiotensin II after it is formed, ARBs block receptors for angiotensin II in vascular smooth muscle & adrenal glands (competitive inhibition) = block vasoconstriction & secretion of aldosterone |
| Side effects/Adverse reactions | Headache, upper respiratory infection, dizziness, Does not cause cough of ACE inhibitors, Does not cause hyperkalemia (K+) |
| Nursing consideration 1 | Monitor vital signs especially BP |
| Nursing consideration 2 | May take with or without food |
| Nursing consideration 3 | Advise patient to change position slowly to avoid orthostatic hypotension |
| Evaluate effectiveness of the drug | Decreased BP, improvement in s/s of CHF (congestive heart failure) |
| Drug to drug interactions | Lithium toxicity, Tagamet = decrease effectiveness of ARBs |
