N112 ARBs

N112 - Angiotension II Receptor Blockers for test 1

QuestionAnswer
ARBs Antiotension II receptor Blocker or Antagonist
Uses Used alone or in combination with other medication to treat HTN (hypertension)
Other uses Adjunctive agent to treat CHF (congestive heart failure)
Action blocks the action of angiotensin II after it is formed, ARBs block receptors for angiotensin II in vascular smooth muscle & adrenal glands (competitive inhibition) = block vasoconstriction & secretion of aldosterone
Side effects/Adverse reactions Headache, upper respiratory infection, dizziness, Does not cause cough of ACE inhibitors, Does not cause hyperkalemia (K+)
Nursing consideration 1 Monitor vital signs especially BP
Nursing consideration 2 May take with or without food
Nursing consideration 3 Advise patient to change position slowly to avoid orthostatic hypotension
Evaluate effectiveness of the drug Decreased BP, improvement in s/s of CHF (congestive heart failure)
Drug to drug interactions Lithium toxicity, Tagamet = decrease effectiveness of ARBs
