| Crystal | a soild in which the atoms are arranged in repeating patterns |
| Luster | the way a mineral reflects light (there are two types of luster, metallic and nonmetallic) |
| Hardeness | measure of how easily a mineral can be scratched |
| Cleavage | describes how a mineral breaks (smoothly) |
| Fracture | describes how a mineral breaks (rough) |
| Streak | the color of a mineral when it is broken up into a powder |
| Specific Gravity | the ratio of the mass of a substance to the mass of an equal volume of water at 4C. |
