| epidermis | the outer layer of the skin |
| melanin | a pigment that gives the skin its color |
| dermis | the inner layer of the skin |
| pore | an opening through which sweat reaches the surface of the skin |
| follicle | structure in the dermis of the skin from which a strand of hair grows |
| cancer | a disease in which some body cells divide uncontrollably |
| homeostasis | the process by which an organism's internal environment is kept stable in spite of the changes in the external environment |
| cell | the basic unit of structure and function in a living thing |
| cell membrane | forms the outside body of the cell |
| nucleus | the control center that directs the cell's activities and contains the information that determines the cell's form and function |
| cytoplasm | made up of clear, jellylike substance that contains cell structures called organelles |
| tissue | a group of similar cells that perform the same function |
| muscle tissue | a body tissue that contracts or shortens making the body parts move |
| nervous tissue | a body tissue that carries electrical messages back and forth between the brain and every other part of the body |
| connective tissue | a body tissue that provides support for the body and connects all of its parts |
| epithelial tissue | a body tissue that covers the surfaces of the body inside and out |
| organ | a structure that is composed of different kinds of tissue |
| organ system | a group of organs that work together to perform a major function |
| stress | the reaction of your body to potentially threatening, challenging or disturbing events |
| fracture | a break in the bone |
| dislocation | an injury in which a bone comes out of its joint |
| sprain | an injury in which the ligaments holding bones together are stretched too far and tear |
| x-ray | form of energy that travels in waves |
| magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) | a method for taking clear images of both the bones and soft tissues of the body |
| arthritis | a disease of the joints that makes movement painful |
| arthroscope | a slim, tube shaped , surgical instrument that doctors use to diagnose a problem in a joint |
| involuntary muscle | a muscle that is not under conscious control e.g. breathing and digesting food |
| voluntary muscle | a muscle that is under conscious control e.g. smiling , turning a page in a book |
| skeletal muscle | a muscle that is attached to the bones of the skeleton and provides the force that moves the bones |
| tendon | strong connective tissue that attaches muscle to bone |
| striated muscle | a muscle that appears banded; also called skeletal muscles |
| smooth muscle | involuntary muscle found inside many internal organs of the body |
| cardiac muscle | muscle tissue found only in the heart |
