ES Composition Terms

Composition/Classification of Matter Terms

TermDefinition
matter anything having both mass and volume
mass amount of matter in an object
volume space occupied by matter
kilogram SI unit of volume
property characteristic/trait of matter
solid state of matter having definite shape and volume; closely spaced and orderly particles
liquid state of matter having definite volume but no definite shape; closely spaced but disorderly particles
gas state of matter having variable volume and shape; widely spaced and randomly moving particles
temperature property that, when raised, can cause matter to change state
melting change of solid to liquid
freezing change of liquid to solid
boiling change of liquid to gas
condensing change of gas to liquid
sublimation change of solid directly to gas, skipping liquid
deposition change of gas directly to solid, skipping liquid
evaporation change of liquid to gas, but below its boiling point
vapor gaseous form of an element below its boiling point
physical change change in matter's appearance but not its composition (ex: breaking, melting)
chemical change change in matter's composition, forming new substances (ex: burning)
substance any pure form of matter with constant (definite) composition
element matter made of only one kind of atom (about 120 of them)
compound matter made of two or more elements combined in a set ratio (ex: water is 2 H's and 1 O)
mixture physical blend of two or more substances with variable composition (ex: skim, 1%, whole milk)
heterogeneous mixture that is unevenly distributed (visibly different parts)
homogeneous mixture that is evenly distributed (appears to be one substance...but it is two or more)
solution synonym for 'homogeneous mixture' (ex: salt-water)
alloy solid solution usually containing two or more metals (ex: brass, bronze, steel)
