Science - Earth Crus

6th Grade Science - Earth Crust Layers

QuestionAnswer
What are convection currents? This type of current is the transfer of heat within a fluid.
What causes a convection Current? TBD
What causes convection currents in the Earth's mantle? Heat from the Earths core and from the mantle itself cause convection currents in the mantle.
The movement of energy from a warmer object to a cooler object is called? Heat Transfer
Heat is transferred by direct contact of particles of matter is called? Conduction
What is the hypothesis of continental drift? Wegener's hypothesis was that originally all the continents were joined together in a single land mass and over time the land mass broke apart and the continents drifted away.
Why did scientist reject Wegener's theory for nearly half a century? Because they thought he was crazy and that he did not provide enough evidence.
All the continents were once joined together in a supercontinent called? Pangea
What is the definition of Pangea? "All lands"
What is a fossil? a trace of an ancient organism preserved in rock.
Wegener's theory that the continents slowly moved over the Earth's surface became known as? Continental Drift
What are the four main layers of the Earth from the surface to the very middle? Crust, Mantle, Outer Core, and Inner Core.
How does temperature and pressure change as you travel DOWN through Earth's layers? Temperature gets hotter and hotter and pressure gets stronger.
Which layers do scientists think is responsible for creating the Earth's magnetic field? Oceanic crust
Compare and Contrast the outer and inner core The outer core and inner core are both round but the outer core is a ring of molten rock where the inner core is a solid mass.
What are three types of heat transfer? Radiation, Convection, Conduction
The original supercontinent called pangea existed about how many years ago? 300 Million!
What kind of land features did Wegener provide as scientific evidence to support his theory? Mountain Ranges, Coal Fields.
What kind of fossil evidence did Wegener provide to support his theory of continental drift? examples where fossils of exactly the same prehistoric species were distributed where you would expect them to be if there had been Continental Drift
What evidence of climate change did Wegener provide to support his theory of continental drift? Evidence of climate change such as glacier deposits in hotter climates
What are two types of evidence geologists use to learn about Earth's interior? 1. Direct evidence from rock samples 2.indirect evidence from seismic waves.Siesmic Waves
A rock that makes up much of the ocean floor Basalt
The force pushing on a surface or area Pressure
The layer made up of liquid iron and nickel Outer core
The uppermost part of the mantle Lithosphere
A rock that makes up the core of the continents Crust
Outer rind of rock Granite
A wave produced by an earthquake Seismic Wave
Soft layer of rock in the mantel Asthenosphere
