Groundwater Water that is underground
Aquifer An underground area where groundwater builds up. Located below permeable layers of rock / soil, and above impermeable bedrock.
River Basin An area of land where all the surface and groundwater drains to the same major river
Watershed An area of land where all the surface and groundwater drains to the same body of water
Surface water Lakes, rivers, streams, the ocean
Runoff Water that flows overland
Infiltration When water soaks into the ground
Condensation When water vapor cools to form clouds
Precipitation When water falls as rain, sleet, or snow
Evaporation When liquid water is heated and rises into the atmosphere as water vapor
Transpiration When water evaporates from the surface of plants
