Observing the Sky

Astronomy The study of all physical objects beyond Earth.
Day The time required for the Earth to rotate once on its axis.
Month Roughly the amount of time required for the moon to orbit the Earth once.
Year The time required for the Earth to orbit the sun once.
Leap Year A year in which an extra day is added to the calendar.
Rotation The spinning motion of a body on its axis.
Revolution The elliptical motion of a body as it orbits another body in space.
Period of Revolution The time it takes for one body to make one complete orbit, or revolution around another body in space.
Orbit The elliptical path a body takes as it travels around another body in space.
Ellipse The shape of orbits in space.
Gravity The force of attraction between two objects.
Star A big ball of gas which gives of heat and light.
Astronomical Unit The average distance between Earth and the Sun.
Constellation A section of the sky that contains recognizable star patterns.
Light Year A unit of length equal to the distance that light travels in one year.
Northern Hemisphere The half of the planet that is north of the equator.
Southern Hemisphere The half of the planet that is south of the equator.
Equator An imaginary line running around the widest part of Earth.
Axis The imaginary line that is shown going through the planet from the North Pole to the South Pole.
