| revolution | the movement of the earth in its orbit around the sun. |
| orbit | the curved path that an object follows as it revolves. |
| waxing | the phases when what we see of the moon is getting larger. |
| rotation | the action or process of spinning on an axis. |
| waning | the phases when what we see of the moon is getting smaller. |
| gravity | a force of attraction between any two objects, caused by those objects pulling on each other. |
| eclipse | an occasion when the sun looks like it is completely or partially covered with a dark circle because the moon is between the Earth and the sun. |
| tides | periodic rises and fall of large bodies of water. |
| axis | the imaginary straight line that something turns around. |
| lunar phases | the shape of the illuminated portion of the moon as seen from Earth. |
| neap tides | tides that occur during the first and third quarters of the moon. |
| spring tides | tides that occur during the new and full moons |
| tidal bore | a body of water that rushes into a narrow bay and causes a very sudden tidal rise. |
| sun | the celestial body around which Earth rotates. |
| moon | the main source of gravity for tides. |
| tidal range | the difference between water levels at low and high tides. |
| high tide | a bulge that takes place on parts of Earth facing or opposite the moon. |
| low tide | forms when water is drawn away from the area between high tides. |
