TermDefinition
revolution the movement of the earth in its orbit around the sun.
orbit the curved path that an object follows as it revolves.
waxing the phases when what we see of the moon is getting larger.
rotation the action or process of spinning on an axis.
waning the phases when what we see of the moon is getting smaller.
gravity a force of attraction between any two objects, caused by those objects pulling on each other.
eclipse an occasion when the sun looks like it is completely or partially covered with a dark circle because the moon is between the Earth and the sun.
tides periodic rises and fall of large bodies of water.
axis the imaginary straight line that something turns around.
lunar phases the shape of the illuminated portion of the moon as seen from Earth.
neap tides tides that occur during the first and third quarters of the moon.
spring tides tides that occur during the new and full moons
tidal bore a body of water that rushes into a narrow bay and causes a very sudden tidal rise.
sun the celestial body around which Earth rotates.
moon the main source of gravity for tides.
tidal range the difference between water levels at low and high tides.
high tide a bulge that takes place on parts of Earth facing or opposite the moon.
low tide forms when water is drawn away from the area between high tides.
