3.1 Science Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Element any substance that cannot be broken down into a simpler substance
Compund Two or more elements combine chemically
Carbohydrate energy rich organic compound made of the elements carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen
Lipid energy rich organic compound made of the elements carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen
Protein large organic molecules made of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and in some cases, sulfur
Amino Acids protein molecules are made up of smaller molecules
Enzyme a type of protein that speeds up a chemical reaction in a living thing
Nucleic Acids very long molecules made of carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, and phosphours
DNA Deoxyribnucleic acid; genetic material that passes information about an organism and is passed from parent to offspring
RNA Ribonucleic acid; production of protein; found in the cytoplasm as well as the nucelus
