3.1 Science Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |

| Element | any substance that cannot be broken down into a simpler substance |
| Compund | Two or more elements combine chemically |
| Carbohydrate | energy rich organic compound made of the elements carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen |
| Lipid | energy rich organic compound made of the elements carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen |
| Protein | large organic molecules made of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and in some cases, sulfur |
| Amino Acids | protein molecules are made up of smaller molecules |
| Enzyme | a type of protein that speeds up a chemical reaction in a living thing |
| Nucleic Acids | very long molecules made of carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, and phosphours |
| DNA | Deoxyribnucleic acid; genetic material that passes information about an organism and is passed from parent to offspring |
| RNA | Ribonucleic acid; production of protein; found in the cytoplasm as well as the nucelus |
