| life science | a way of learning about the natural world. the knowledge gained through process of exploring the natural world |
| physical science | a branch of science that deals with primarily nonliving things, including the nature and properties of energy |
| earth science | a branch of science that deals with the Earth or one of its parts |
| technology | applying that information/knowledge of science to life |
| concrete tool | an touchable item a scientist uses for investigation |
| abstract tool | an idea or concept a scientist uses for investigation |
| Scientific Method | tool used by scientists worldwide in order to investigate topics in an organized manner |
| hypothesis | an educated guess based upon knowledge gained through research |
| experiment | the part of investigation that tests the hypothesis |
| control | the parts of the experiment that are the same between all setups |
| variable | the factor being tested in an experiment; this is what causes the results of an experiment |
| control group | the group in an experiment that lacks the variable; used as a basis for comparison |
| experimental group | the group in an experiment that contains the variable |
| data | information gained through observation |
| observation | an examination of evidence you obtain through your senses (see, hear, touch, taste, smell) |
| quantitative observation | an observation that contains a quantity or amount of something (i.e. the race was 100m long) |
| qualitative observation | an observation that describes a quality or characteristic (i.e. the race was short) |
| assumption | an answer not based on real evidence; this happens when you jump to a conclusion |
| conclusion | an answer based on observation, proof, and real evidence |
| scientific theory | an explanation for some natural phenomenon with a large body of supporting evidence |
| scientific law | a statement of a scientific principle that appears to be without exception at the time it is made; tend to be unchanging |
