Biology
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Synthesis | The putting together of substances or elements that are apart, to form a whole. |
| Transport | When ions move across a cell membrane from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration. |
| Excretion | When things of metabolism or other non-useful things are rid from an organism. |
| Respiration | When living things take in oxygen and let out CO2. |
| Nutrition | The process of getting food for health and growth. |
| Growth | The process of increasing physical size. |
| Reproduction | The action of creating offspring either sexually or asexually. |
| Response to Stimuli | When an organism responds to an external or internal change. |
| Transpiration | When trees or plants give off water or H2O. |
| Homeostasis | A tendency for the conditions inside the body of an animal (as a mammal) to stay pretty much the same. Also known as regulation. |
| Somatic | Body cell (not a sex cell) |
| Autotrophs | Organisms that have make their own food. (usually plants) |
| Heterotrophs | Organisms that have to find their own food. |
| Covelant Bond | When electrons are shared in a bond. Reminder: Most things having to do with water, are because of Hydrogen bonds. |
| Simple Sugars | Also known as monosaccharides, glucose, monomers. |
| Disaccaride | Two monosaccarides combined. |
| Polysaccaride | Complex carb. A lot of moosaccarides in one of these. |
| Dehydration Synthesis | Combining, to make something, opposite of hydrolysis. Glucose to starch is an example. |
| Starch | This is the food storage in plants, also a polysaccharide. |
| Cellulose | Cell Walls |
| Glycogen | Animals |
| Lipid | Fats, oils, and waxes. |
| 1 Glycerl and 3 Fatty Acids | 1 Lipid |
| Proteins | Polymers made up of amino acids. |
| Enzymes | Speed up chemical reaction. |
| Nucleacic Acids | Either DNA or RNA |
| Cell Theory | All organisims are made up of cells. Basic unit of life. Cells arise from preexisting cells. |
