Biology Vocabulary

Biology

TermDefinition
Synthesis The putting together of substances or elements that are apart, to form a whole.
Transport When ions move across a cell membrane from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration.
Excretion When things of metabolism or other non-useful things are rid from an organism.
Respiration When living things take in oxygen and let out CO2.
Nutrition The process of getting food for health and growth.
Growth The process of increasing physical size.
Reproduction The action of creating offspring either sexually or asexually.
Response to Stimuli When an organism responds to an external or internal change.
Transpiration When trees or plants give off water or H2O.
Homeostasis A tendency for the conditions inside the body of an animal (as a mammal) to stay pretty much the same. Also known as regulation.
Somatic Body cell (not a sex cell)
Autotrophs Organisms that have make their own food. (usually plants)
Heterotrophs Organisms that have to find their own food.
Covelant Bond When electrons are shared in a bond. Reminder: Most things having to do with water, are because of Hydrogen bonds.
Simple Sugars Also known as monosaccharides, glucose, monomers.
Disaccaride Two monosaccarides combined.
Polysaccaride Complex carb. A lot of moosaccarides in one of these.
Dehydration Synthesis Combining, to make something, opposite of hydrolysis. Glucose to starch is an example.
Starch This is the food storage in plants, also a polysaccharide.
Cellulose Cell Walls
Glycogen Animals
Lipid Fats, oils, and waxes.
1 Glycerl and 3 Fatty Acids 1 Lipid
Proteins Polymers made up of amino acids.
Enzymes Speed up chemical reaction.
Nucleacic Acids Either DNA or RNA
Cell Theory All organisims are made up of cells. Basic unit of life. Cells arise from preexisting cells.
