| Ecology | The study of the interactions of living organisms with one another & with their environment |
| Biotic | Describes living factors in the environment |
| Abiotic | Describes the nonliving part of the environment including water, rocks, light & tempature |
| 5 Levels of Environmental Organization | Organism, Population, Community, Ecosystem, Biosphere |
| Organism | 1 of a certain species |
| Population | A group of organisms of the same species that live in a specific geographical area |
| Community | All of the populations of species that live in the same habitat & interact with each other |
| Ecosystem | A community of organisms and their abiotic environment |
| Biosphere | The part of Earth where life exists |
| Producer/Autotroph | Organisms that use sunlight directly to make food |
| Consumer/Heterotroph | Organisms that eat other organisms |
| Herbivore | A organism that eats only plants |
| Carnivore | A organism that eats animals |
| Omnivore | organism that eats both plants and animals |
| Scavenger | A animal or other organism that feeds on dead organic matter |
| Decomposer | A organism that gets energy by breaking down food |
| Food Web | A diagram that shows the feeding relationships between organisms in a ecosystem |
| Food Chain | The pathway of energy transfer through various stages as a result of feeding patterns in a serious of organisms |
| Energy Pyramid | A triangular diagram that shows a ecosystems loss of energy which results as energy passes through a ecosystems food chain |
| Limiting Factor | A resource so scarce it limits the size of a population |
| Carrying Capacity | The largest population that an environment can support at any given time |
| Predator | An organism that is killed and eaten by another organism |
| Predator Adaptations | Speed Agility Great sense of smell Camoflauge |
| Prey Adaptations | Spray poison travel in schools run away |
| Symbiosis | A relationship in which 2 different organisms live in close association with each other |
| Mutualism | A relationship between 2 species in which both benifit |
| Commensalism | A relationship between 2 organisms in which 1 organism benefits and other is unaffected |
| Parasitism | A relationship between 2 species in which 1 species the parasite benefits from the other species the host which is harmed |
