Ecology

TermDefinition
Parasitism a relation between organisms in which one lives as a parasite on another.
Mutualism a relationship between two species of organisms in which both benefit from the association.
Commensalism a type of relationship between two species of a plant, animal, fungus, etc., in which one lives with, on, or in another without damage to either.
Symbiosis the living together of two dissimilar organisms, as in mutualism, commensalism, amensalism, or parasitism.
Prey an animal hunted or seized for food, especially by a carnivorous animal.
Predator an animal that lives by capturing and eating other animals.
Carrying Capacity the maximum, equilibrium number of organisms of a particular species that can be supported indefinitely in a given environment.
Limiting Factor an environmental factor that tends to limit population size.
Energy Pyramid a depiction of the amount of energy in each trophic level of an ecosystem
Food Chain a series of organisms interrelated in their feeding habits, the smallest being fed upon by a larger one
Food Web a series of organisms related by predator-prey and consumer-resource interactions
Decomposer an organism, usually a bacterium or fungus, that breaks down the cells of dead plants and animals
Predator Adaptions is to locate and subdue pery better
Prey Adaptions is to hide or to get away better so that the prey wont be eaten
Scavenger an animal or other organism that feeds on dead organic matter.
Omnivore an organism that eats both plants and animals
Carnivore an organism that eats animals
Herbivore an organism that only eats plants
Consumer an organism, usually an animal, that feeds on plants or other animals.
Producer an organism, as a plant, that is able to produce its own food
Biospere the part of earth where life exists.
Ecosystem a community of organisms and their abiotic environment.
Community all the populations of species that live in the same habitat and interact with each other
Population a group of organisms of species that live in a specific geographical area
Organism a form of an organized body or system that is living being,animal,plant ,or human

Abiotic describes the nonliving part of the environment,including water, rocks, light, and temperature
Biotic describes living factors in the environment
Ecology the study of the interactions of living organisms with one another and with their environment.
