| ecosystem | All the living and nonliving things that interact in a particular area |
| habitat | The place where an organism lives and that provides the things that an organism needs |
| biotic factor | A living part of an ecosystem |
| abiotic factor | The nonliving parts of an ecosystem |
| population | All the members of one species in a particular area |
| society | A closely related population of animals that work together for the benefit of the whole group |
| community | All the different populations that live in an area together |
| ecology | The study of how living things interact with one another and with their environment |
| limiting factor | An environmental factor that prevents a population from increasing |
| carrying capacity | The largest population that an area can support |
| producer | Organisms that can produce and store their own food |
| consumer | An organism that obtains food and energy by eating other organisms |
| decomposer | An organism that obtains energy by breaking down wastes and the remains of dead organisms |
| food chain | A diagram that shows the flow of energy from one organism to another organism in an ecosystem |
| food web | A diagram that shows how many food chains are connected in a particular ecosystem |
