| Polar Molecule | Unequal distribution of electrons. The two ends of the molecule have opposite charges. |
| Cohesion | the molecular force between particles within a body or substance that acts to unite them. |
| Adhesion | The clinging of one substance to another. |
| Surface Tension | Measure of how difficult it is to stretch or break the surface of a liquid. |
| Kinetic Energy | Energy of motion |
| Heat | Form of energy/ total kinetic energy |
| Temperature | Measure of heat intensity/ average kinetic energy |
| Specific Heat | The amount of heat that must be gained or lost for 1 g of that substance to change its temperature by 1 C. |
| Heat of vaporization | Quantity of heat a liquid must absorb for 1 g of it to be converted from liquid to gas. |
| Solution | A liquid that is a completely homogenous mixture of 2 or more substances. |
| Hydration Shell | The sphere of water molecules around each dissolved ion. |
| Hydrophilic | Substance that has an affinity for water |
| Hydrophobic | Substances that repel water. |
| Base | pH>7 |
| Acid | pH<7 |
| Neutral | pH=7 |
| pH= | -log(H+) |
| Buffer | Substance that minimizes change in the concentration of H+ and OH- in a solution. |
| Acid Precipitation | Any precipitin with a pH lower than 5.2 |
