Plant Vocabulary Words

TermDefinition
Carbon a natural abundant, nonmetallic element that occurs in all organic compounds and can be found in all known forms of life
Carbon Dioxide (CO2) a colorless, odorless gas that is present in the atmosphere formed during respiration and used by plants in photosynthesis
Photosynthesis the process by which green plants make their own food (carbohydrates) from carbon dioxide and water using energy captured from sunlight
Respiration process that take place in the cells and tissue during which energy is released and carbon dioxide is produced
Stems the stalk that supports a leaf, flower, or fruit
Root a part of the body of a plant that develops typically from the radicle and grows downward into the soil, anchoring the plant and absorbing nutriment and moisture
Tap Root a main root descending downward from the radicle and giving off small lateral roots.
Pistil the ovule-bearing or seed-bearing female organ of a flower, consisting when complete of ovary, style, and stigmas
Ovule the plant part that contains the embryo sac and the female germ cell which after fertilization develops into a seed
Stamen the pollen-bearing organ of a flower consisting of the filament and the anther
Pollen the fertilizing element of flowering plants consisting of fine powdery yellowish grains or spores, sometimes in masses
Petal one of the often colored segments of a flower.
Seed COat a layer of a seed that keeps it warm in the winter months and protects it from harm
Cotyledon the food source of a seed that will eventually form into leaves
Monocot a plant that had one cotyledon int eh seed; the majority of all flowering plants are these
Dicot a plant that has two cotyledons; maples, oaks, and magnolias are examples of these
Embryo located on the bottom of the seed that will grow into the root, stem, and leaves of a plant
radicle the bottom of the embryo that will grow into the roots of the plant
Hypocotyl the part of the plant embryo directly below the cotyledons forming a connection with the radicle
Epicotyl the part of the plant embryo that connects with the hypocotyl
Leaf one of the expanded, usual green, organs on the stem of a plant
Germinate to begin to grow or develop starting from a seed
Chlorophyll the green coloring matter of leaves and plants essential to production of carbohydrates by photosynthesis
Stomata small slits of openings in teh top layer of leaves, stems, etc through which gases are exchanged.
