ES Scientific Method

Scientific Method Terms

inference a judgement (often based on experience)
observation a fact obtained using senses/tools
pure science discovery; seeking knowledge (for its own sake)
applied science technology, invention, practical application of knowledge, uses
Earth science broadly: filds of science dealing with planet Earth - its surface and interior, atmosphere, waters, and position in space
matter anything that has mass and volume
composition what matter is made of
properties characteristics/traits of matter; how matter behaves
energy has the ability to cause change
problem exists when there is a gap between knowledge and understanding
exercise steps to finding the answer are known, so just being practiced
examples of problem-solving strategies guess and check, look for a pattern, work backwards, break into simpler steps...
critical thinking "figuring things out" skills...applying logic to solve a problem
scientific method organized (systematic) way to solve a scientific problem
hypothesis testable prediction; possible solution to a scientific problem (based on observations)
theory EXPLANATION for a behavior/pattern in nature
scientific law DESCRIBES a rule/pattern in nature (often mathematically)
experiment organized way to test a hypothesis
control a standard for comparison (i.e. the 'untreated' sample
constant quantity that remains constant (in a controlled experiment)
manipulated (independent) variable quantity adjusted by the experimenter
responding (dependent) variable quantity that changes because some other quantity was adjusted
mnemonic a memory tool (ex: ROY B. BIV)
conclusion final summary statement of results
analysis looking for any patterns in the data collected
