Animal Growth and Adaptation

| environment | everything that surrounds and affects an animal, including living and nonliving things |
| climate | the average temperature and rainfall in an area over many years |
| shelter | a place where an animal is protected from other animals or from weather |
| oxygen | one fo the many gases in air |
| adaptation | a body part or behavior that helps an animal meet its needs in its environment |
| camouflage | an animal's color or pattern that helps it blend in with its surroundings |
| mimicry | an adaptation in which an animal looks very much like another animal or an object |
| instinct | a behavior that an animal begins life with |
| migration | the movement of a group of one type of animal from one region to another and back again |
| prey | an animal that is hunted and eaten by another animal |
| predator | an animal that hunts and eats another animal |
| hibernation | a period when an animal goes into a long, deep "sleep"; its body functions slow down, and the animal uses less energy |
| body covering | the material on the outside of a plant or animal that helps protect the organism |
| organism | another word for living thing |
| reproduction | to make more offspring |
| life cycle | a pattern of changes that happen during an organism's life |
| habitat | consists of food, water, shelter, and space in a suitable arrangement |
| extinction | the complete elimination of a species from the Earth |
