The Living Ocean

TermDefinition
Taxonomy scientific classification of organisms
Pelagic zone primary division of the sea, which includes the whole mass of water subdivided into neritic and oceanic zones; also pertaining to the open sea.
Benthic zone of the sea floor, or pertaining to organisms living on or in the sea floor
Neritic zone shallow-water marine environment extending from low water to the edge of the continental shelf.
Oceanic zone open ocean away from the direct influence of land
Poikilotherm organism with a body temperature that varies according to the temperature of its surroundings
Homeotherm organism with a body temperature that varies only within narrow limits
Euphotic zone depth of the water column where there is sufficient sunlight for growth of photosynthetic organisms
Aphotic zone zone that part of the ocean in which light is insufficient to carry on photosynthesis
Bioluminescence production of light by living organisms as a result of a chemical reaction either within certain cells or the cells in some form of excretion
Photophore luminous organ found on fish
Theory of Evolution the theory describing how random changes in the genetic makeup of a species are acted upon by environmental forces over successive generations in a manner that forms new species
Natural selection the differential survival and production of a population that results in evolution; the forces that cause evolution
Autotrophs pertaining to organisms able to manufacture their own food from inorganic substances
Heterotrophs pertaining to organisms requiring organic compounds for food; unable to manufacture food from inorganic compounds
Plankton passively drifting or weakly swimming organisms
Phytoplankton microscopic algal and photosynthetic forms of plankton
Zooplankton animal forms of plankton
Luciferin an enzyme that combines with oxygen and luciferase to produce bioluminescence
Luciferase an enzyme that combines with oxygen and luciferin to produce bioluminescence
