Life Cycles

Life Cycle of a Butterfly

TermDefinition
metamorphosis the process of developmental changing from one thing into another, usually marked by body changes
chrysalis the hard shell covering the pupa, shaped like an upside-down teardrop
pupa the third stage of the butterfly life cycle, another name for the chrysalis
caterpillar the larva stage of a butterfly or moth
larva the second stage of the butterfly life cycle, another term for caterpillar
molt the process through which caterpillars shed skin as they grow
abdomen the hind part of the body on the caterpillar and the butterfly. All insects have one
proboscis the butterfly tongue, which works like a drinking straw. This is how they sip nectar from flowers
