Pollutant A harmful substance in the air, water, or soil
Photochemical Smog A brown haze that forms over sunny cities, caused by the reaction of sunlight with the pollutants in the air
Acid Rain Rain that contains more acid than normal
Particulate Matter Tiny particles of solid or liquid materials, that are mixed into the air
Pollution The contamination of Earth’s land, water, or air
Air Quality Index A scale used to measure the air quality of an area, based mainly on the amount of ozone and particulate matter present
Ground Level Ozone A form of oxygen that contains three atoms instead of two, and is a component of smog
Ozone Layer Part of the stratosphere that contains a higher amount of ozone than the rest of the atmosphere
Chloroflourocarbons (CFCs) Man-made gasses that contain chlorine and fluorine, which react with ozone and damage the ozone layer
Greenhouse Effect The trapping of heat near the Earth’s surface due to the gasses in the atmosphere
Global Warming A theory predicting that the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will cause the average temperature on Earth to continue to rise
Ultraviolet Any type of electromagnetic radiation with wavelength shorter than visible light.
Electromagnetic Spectrum The range of all electromagnetic radiation
SPF The measurement of how effective a product is to protect against the sun’s radiation
Moblie Source A source of pollution, such as a car or bus, that moves and cannot be regularly monitored
Point Source A source of pollution, such as a large factory, that must report hazardous emissions to the government
Area Source Source of pollution, such as a home or small businees, that is not monitored by the government
Stewardship The personal responsibility for taking care of something that is not yours
