anorexia Lack or loss of appetite, resulting in the inability to eat
asystole Absence of contractions of the heart
analgesic Pertaining to relieving pain; a medication that relieves pain
benign noncancerous; not progressive
Cardiologist One who specializes in the study of diseases and disorders of the heart
cardiology The study of the heart
carditis Inflammation of the heart muscles
coronary artery One of a pair of arteries that branch from the aorta
dependent edema A fluid accumulation in the tissues influenced by gravity; usually greater in the lower extremities than in tissue levels above the level of the heart
dysrhythmia Abnormal rhythm
echocardiogram The graphic outline or record of movements of structures of the heart produced by ultrasonography (ultrasound)
endocarditis Inflammation of the inner lining of the heart
hepatomegaly Enlargement of the liver
hyperlipidemia an excessive level of fats in the blood
hypertension Elevated blood pressure, higher than 135/85mmHg
hypotension Low blood pressure, less than normal pressure reading
hypoxemia Insufficient oxygenation of arterial blood
cardiac tamponade compression of the heart caused by accumulation of blood or other fluid within the pericardial
pericarditis inflammation of the pericardium
varicose veins enlarged, superficial veins; a twisted, dilated vein with incompetent valves
coarctation of the aorta a congenital heart defect characterized by a localized narrowing of the aorta, which results in increased blood pressure in the upper extremities
