Blood agar, sheep | Tryptic soy agar with 5% sheep blood added. Grows most non-fastidious bacteria |
Chocolate agar | Enriched medium. Supplies X & V factors. |
Columbia colistin-nalidixic acid agar (CNA) | Selective for gram positives. Colistin and nalidixic acid suppress most gram-negatives. |
Phenylethyl alcohol agar | Selective for gram-positive cocci and anaerobic gram-negative rods. |
Streptococcal selective agar (SSA) | Selective for Group A and B strep. Contains trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole in 5% sheep blood. |
Eosin methylene blue (EMB) | Selective, differential medium for enteric gram-negative rods. Eosin and methylene blue. |
MacConkey agar (MAC) | Selective, differential medium for enteric gram-negative rods. Bile sale and crystal violet. |
MacConkey sorbitol agar (SMAC) | Selective for E. coli 0157:H7, which does not ferment sorbitol. Colonies are colorless. |
Hektoen enteric agar (HE) | Selective, differential medium for isolation of enteric pathogens from stool. Bile salts, bromothymol blue, and acid fushin inhibit normal GI flora. |
Xylose lysine deoxycholate (XLD) | Selective, differential medium for isolation f Salmonella and Shigella from stool. |
Salmonella-Shigella agar (SS) | Selective for Salmonella and Shigella. Brillian green and bile salts inhibit coliforms. |
Campylobacter blood agar (Campy BA) | Selective enrichment medium for isolation of Campylobacter form stool. |
