Science Test

QuestionAnswer
What are the 3 types of faults? Normal, Reverse and Strike-Slip
What is a normal fault? forms when the hanging wall drops down. One side goes down and one side goes up.
What is a Reverse fault? A reverse fault is just like a normal fault because they one side goes up and one side goes down, however in a reverse fault, the up side hangs over the down side.
What is a Strike- Slip Fault? walls that move sideways, not up or down.
What are the 3 types of stress? Shearing, compresion, and tension
What is Shearing? A force that pushes two rocks in 2 opposite directions. Causes rock to break slip or change shape.
What is Compression? A force that pushes two rocks together. Causes crust to rise creating land forms such as mountains.
What is tension? A force that pulls on rock in opposite directions
What is a hot spring? forms when groundwater heated by a nearby body of magma rises to the surface and collects in a natural pool
What is a geyser? is a fountain of water and steam that erupts from the ground
What are the parts of volcano lava, magma, magma chamber, side vents, vent, pipe, crater, lava flow
What are the types of volcano eruptions? pyroclastic flow, Aa. , Pahoehoe
What is a pyroclastic flow? when the magma is thick and sticky, a volcano will erupt explosively; occurs when the magma becomes trapped in the volcano’s pipe and pressure builds up until it explodes
What is a Aa flow? Cooler and slow moving, more silicon
What is a Pahoehoe flow? Hotter and faster moving, less silicon
What are the stages if a volcano Active, dormant, extinct
What is an active volcano? when a volcano is either erupting or most likely going to erupt in the near future.
What is a dormant volcano? scientists expect a dormant volcano to awaken in the future and become active
What is an extinct volcano? A volcano that does not erupt anymore and most likely never will in the future.
