Air Mass A large body of air with similar temperature, humidity, and air pressure
Tropical A warm, low pressure air mass
Polar A cold, high pressure air mass
Maritime A humid air mass, that forms over an ocean
Continental A dry air mass, that forms over land
Front The boundary where two air masses meet
Occluded A warm air mass that has been caught between two cold air masses, and is cut off from the ground
Cyclone A swirling center of warm, humid, low pressure air, where wind spirals inward
Anticyclone A swirling area of cool, dry, high pressure air, where wind spirals outward
Storm A violent disturbance in the atmosphere, caused by a sudden change in pressure
Thunderstorm A small storm that brings heavy precipitation, and thunder and lightning
Lightning A spark caused by the electrical charges in a cloud
Tornado A rapidly whirling, funnel-shaped cloud, that touches the Earth’s surface
Hurricane A tropical cyclone that has winds greater than 119 km per hour
Storm Surge The water that sweeps across the coast where a hurricane lands
Evacuate To temporarily leave an area where a storm is expected
Meteorologist Scientists who study and try to predict weather
Isobar Lines on a weather map, joining places that have the same air pressure
Isotherm Lines on a weather map, joining places that have the same temperature
