Discuss the categories of scientific knowledge: -Foundation: Confidence in “The Scientific Method” data, reason, -Methods: Observations, Senses, Experimentation, Data Collection -Validation: Public - Objective/Systematic, Verifiable/Replicable, cumulative -School of Thought
Define Hypothesis A hypothesis is an educated guess about how things work. Most of the time a hypothesis is written like this: "If _____[I do this] _____, then _____[this]_____ will happen." (Fill in the blanks with the appropriate information from your own experiment.)
In Science, can we ever prove a hypothesis is true (Y/N)? EXPLAIN. No, we can never demonstrate the absolute truth of a hypothesis because we do not have perfect knowledge or control of all variables affecting that hypothesis.
What is a null hypothesis and why do we use it? Null: only to disprove. In statistics, the only way of supporting your hypothesis is to refute the null hypothesis. Rather than trying to prove your idea (the alternate hypothesis) right you must show that the null hypothesis is likely to be wrong
What is Pseudoscience? Examples? Pseudo-science: Astrology, Homeopathy, (Untestable, irrefutable, lacks rigorous application of scientific method. )
What are factors that are key for an effective presentation? List three. Practice out loud Arrive Early – Get Comfortable with surroundings. Make sure you know how everything work Visit the Room before hand
Define the experimental method. Step 1. Make observations. Step 2. Form a hypothesis. Step 3. Make a prediction. Step 4. Perform an experiment. Step 5. Analyze the results of the experiment. Step 6. Draw a conclusion. Step 7. Report your results.
What was William Gossett’s contribution to the world of statistics? Logical revolution, Regression analysis
