Unit 13 Evolution

TermDefinition
Natural Selection Organisms that can survive will pass their traits on to their offspring. Also called survival of the fittest. This environment has a predator that eats the green bugs. The brown bugs survive and pass the trait on to the next generation.
Homeostasis Keeping a stable internal environment
Variation This means the differences between individuals.
Antibiotics Drugs that should kill bacteria. Antibiotics kill bacteria by destroying their cell wall.
Population Members of the same group of living things In some cases members of a population must compete for survival. Some will win this competition and some will lose.
Resistance This develops in organisms that are born with a genetic trait that allows them to survive.
Adaptation A body part that helps a living thing survive. An elephant’s trunk is an adaptation because he can eat, drink and move things with this. No other animal has this adaptation so he has very little competition for resources.
Homologous Structures Body parts that have different functions but they evolved from a common ancestor.
