Science-Chapter 2
Chapter two- Animal and plant cells
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cell membrane | Thin layer of skin that holds the cell together Controls what enters and leaves the cell |
| Cytoplasm | The watery fluid in which other cell structures are suspended |
| Nucleus | The brain of the cell. Controls the cells activities. Controls how cells divide to form new cells |
| Small vacuoles | Used for the temporary storage of food and wastes |
| Chloroplasts | They contain chlorophyll which allows the plant to make food |
| Cell wall | Tough structure present outside the membrane. It gives the plant cell support. |
| Large vacuole | This stores water sugar and waste. Plant cells stroe sugar in the form of starch |
| Eyepiece | Is where you look through |
| Stage | The stage is where you place the slide |
| Objective lens | Is just above the stage |
| Focus knob | Moves the objective lens up and down in order to focus the object you are looking at |

| What do red blood cells do? | Carries oxygen around the body |
| What do white blood cells do? | Defends against diseses |
| What do nerve cells do? | Carries messages |
| Tissue? Give example | Is a group of cells working together Muscle Nerves |
| Organ? Give example | Is a group of tissues working together Your heart Your lungs Your stomach |
| System? Give example | Is a group of organs working together The dugestive system The urinary system The cardiovascular system |
| What is growth a result of? | Growth ia dues to cells dividing |
| Name three things a plant cell has that an animal cell doesnt | Chloroplasts Cell wall Large vacuoles |
| List all the things plant and animal cells have in common | Cell membrane Cytoplasm Nucleus Small vacuoles |
