Chapter two- Animal and plant cells

TermDefinition
Cell membrane Thin layer of skin that holds the cell together Controls what enters and leaves the cell
Cytoplasm The watery fluid in which other cell structures are suspended
Nucleus The brain of the cell. Controls the cells activities. Controls how cells divide to form new cells
Small vacuoles Used for the temporary storage of food and wastes
Chloroplasts They contain chlorophyll which allows the plant to make food
Cell wall Tough structure present outside the membrane. It gives the plant cell support.
Large vacuole This stores water sugar and waste. Plant cells stroe sugar in the form of starch
Eyepiece Is where you look through
Stage The stage is where you place the slide
Objective lens Is just above the stage
Focus knob Moves the objective lens up and down in order to focus the object you are looking at
What does a muscle cell do? Allows movement
What do red blood cells do? Carries oxygen around the body
What do white blood cells do? Defends against diseses
What do nerve cells do? Carries messages
Tissue? Give example Is a group of cells working together Muscle Nerves
Organ? Give example Is a group of tissues working together Your heart Your lungs Your stomach
System? Give example Is a group of organs working together The dugestive system The urinary system The cardiovascular system
What is growth a result of? Growth ia dues to cells dividing
Name three things a plant cell has that an animal cell doesnt Chloroplasts Cell wall Large vacuoles
