Earth's Layers

Flashcards of Earths' Layers

QuestionAnswer
What are the four main layers of the Earth? The crust, the mantle, the outer core and the inner core.
Describe the crust. The Earth's crust is a layer of rock that composes is a layer of rock that composes Earth's outer skin. The crust makes up only one percent of the Earth's mass. The oceanic crust is 7km thick. The continental crust is about 25km thick to 70km thick.
Describe the mantle. The mantle makes up almost 2/3 of the Earth's mass. The mantle is about 2,900 km thick.
Describe the core. There is an inner and outer core. The core itself makes up nearly 1/3 of the Earth's mass. Scientists believe that the outer core is a liquid and the inner core is solid. Made from nickel iron.
What is the difference between the oceanic and continental crust? The continental crust is thicker than the oceanic crust. The continental crust ranges from 25 km thick to 70 km thick. The oceanic crust is more dense and is about 7 km thick.
What are seismic waves and where do they come from? A seismic wave is a wave that occurs in the Earth. The seismic waves are produced by earthquakes.
What are the differences between the asthenosphere and the lithosphere? Rocks in the lithosphere are rigid. The asthenosphere is the transmitting part of the mantle which acts like a plastic.
What are constructive forces and destructive forces? Constructive forces build up an existing land form or create a new one. Destructive forces are forces that destroy land forms.
What is the theory of continental drift? 200 million years ago, were connected together in one super continent called Pangaea.
What will happen in the future? Will the continents move again? Yes the continents are believed to join back, to form Pangaea once again.
Who discovered this theory? Alfred Wegener
What does Pangaea mean. "Pan" means all and "Gaea" means Earth. So it means all of Earth.
What evidence did Wegener have to prove his theory? Evidence from fossils, climate, and land forms.
What evidence did Wegener have from fossils? A fossil is any trace of an ancient organism that has been preserved in rock. Wegener found similar fossils on different continents. Glossopetris was one kind of fossil he found.
What evidence did Wegener have from climate? Wegener found that glaciers once covered warm regions. Such as Africa. That doesn't make sense that glaciers would form in hot, dry climates.
What evidence did Wegener have from land forms? He saw that certain mountain ranges line up with others on different continents. Similar coal matched in North America and Europe.
What happened after Wegener released his theory to the public? No one believed him.
What did the public think of him? They thought he was acting like a weatherman putting clouds together.
What is basalt? Rock that makes up much of the ocean floor.
What is geology? The study of the plant Earth.
What is granite? A rock that makes up the core of the continents.
Pressure? The force pushing on a surface or area.
