Earth and Its Forms

Plate Tectonics, Boundaries, Landforms, Theories,

QuestionAnswer
What are the three different types of plate boundaries? Convergent - Divergent - Transform
What is the difference between a constructive force and a destructive force? A constructive force is a force that creates landforms, while a destructive force breaks down ones that were already there.
What are Earth's different layers? Crust - (Asthenosphere and Lithosphere) Mantle - Outer Core - Inner Core
What is a well tested concept that explains a wide range of observations? Theory
What is a break in the Earth's crust? Fault
What is the geological theory that states the pieces of Earth's crust are constant slow motion? Plate Tectonics
What is a deep valley on land that forms along a divergent boundary? Rift
What can be formed from convergent oceanic and continental boundaries? Trench (subduction)
What can be formed from convergent continental boundaries? Mountain Ranges
What can be formed from divergent oceanic boundaries? Volcanoes, Volcanic Islands
How is a mid-ocean ridge formed? A mid-ocean ridge is formed when convection currents from the mantle let some magma rise and let out into the surface.
What are convection currents? Convection currents are heat currents from the mantle that cause the movement in the pieces of the lithosphere (plates).
What was Alfred Wegener's theory? Alfred Wegener believed that all the continents were one big mass of land, Pangea, and that Pangea broke apart over time and the continents moved to where they are today.
What evidence did Alfred Wegener have of his theory? He could not explain the movement of the land masses, but Alfred Wegener found evidence of fossils, landforms, and climate as support.
Describe the crust. The crust is the thinnest layer of the Earth and has no set temperature. It has plates and has two types, oceanic and continental crust.
Describe the mantle. The mantle is the thickest layer of Earth. It is made of plastic like material and has convection currents. It is 1000 C.
Describe the outer core. The outer core is made of fluid, hot substance. It has a few convection currents that help maintain the Earth's magnetic field. It helps suspend the inner core, too.
Describe the inner core. The inner core is the inside of the Earth. It is solid because of the pressure put on it, and is made of iron and nickel. It is suspended in the outer core.
What is the theory of plate tectonics? The theory of plate tectonics is that convection currents in the mantle shift plates of the lithosphere, causing constant construction and destruction on the Earth.
Describe each plate boundary. Convergent - collides Divergent - separates Transform - slides

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
