Inside the Earth

Review of plate tectonics, earthquakes and soil formation

QuestionAnswer
What is the Earth's crust made of? The crust is made of soil and rock.
What is the mantle made of? The mantle is made of superheated rock; soft, molten.
What is the outer core made of? The outer core is made of superheated liquid iron.
What is the inner core made of? The inner core is made of solid iron and some nickel.
What makes the plates move? The plates move due to convection heat flow like boiling water.
What are seismic waves and how do they travel? Seismic waves are caused by transform boundaries; P waves travel thru rock and liquid, but S waves only travel thru rock.
What is the 'Continental Drift' theory? Continents were one large supercontinent called Pangea and over millions of years drifted apart to what we have today.
What is plate tectonics? The movement of the continental and oceanic plates is called plate tectonics: transform-where plates rubs against each other; divergent-where plates pull away from each other; and convergent-where plates push up against each other.
What causes volcanoes, Ring of Fire, and trenches? Convergent boundaries with subduction zones
What causes ridges? Divergent boundaries
What causes faults? Transform boundaries or subduction zones; ex. Rocky Mountains
What is humus? Organic material in soil like decomposed fruit, leaves and dead animals
What is bedrock? Contributes small rocks to the soil
What causes the colors in soil? Brown/black from humus; Purple/black from magnesium; Yellow/red from iron; White/gray from salt
What is Stewardship? Taking care of the earth-air, water, soil, and all living things

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
