Earths Atmosphere

I can describe the atmosphere as a mixture of gases.

QuestionAnswer
Atmosphere Is a thin layer of air that forms a protective covering around the planet.
Troposphere Lowest of earths atmospheric layers which contains 99% of water vapor and 75% of the atmospheric gases.
Stratosphere The layer directly above the troposphere extends from 10 km above earths surface to about 50 km, a portion of it contains higher levels of gas called ozone.
Mesosphere Extends from the top of the stratosphere to about 85km above earth.
Ionosphere Within the mesosphere and the thermosphere is a layer of electrically charged particles called the _________________.
Thermosphere The___________ is the first layer to receive the suns rays.
Exosphere The___________ along with the thermosphere are the first layers to receive the suns rays.
Ultra Violet radiation Is one of the many types of energy that come to earth from the sun.
Ozone layer Within the stratosphere, about 19 km to 48 km above your head lies an atmospheric layer called the____________. ________ is made of oxygen. Although you cannot see the_____________ your life depends on it.
Chlorofluorocarbons Chemical compounds used in some refrigerators, air conditioners, and aerosol sprays, and in production of some foam packaging.
Air Mass Is a large body of air that has properties similar to the to the part of earth's surface over which it develops.
Front A boundary between two air masses of different density, moisture, or temperature.
Tornado Is a violently rotating column of air in contact with the ground.
Hurricane The most powerful storm, is a large, swirling, low pressure system that forms over the warm Atlantic Ocean. It is like a machine that turns heat energy from the ocean into wind. A storm must have winds of at least 119 km/h to be called a hurricane.
Blizzard If the winds are 56 km/h the temperature is low, the visibility is less than 400 m in falling or blowing snow, and if these conditions persist three hours or more.
Cold Front Occurs when colder air advances toward warm air. Shown on maps as a blue line with triangles.
Warm Front _____________ fronts form when lighter, warmer air advances over heavier, colder air. Shown on maps as a red line with semicircles.
Occluded Front An ____________ front involves three air masses of different temperatures colder air, cool air, and warm air. Shown on maps as purple lines with triangles and semicircles.
Stationary Front Occurs when a boundary between air masses stops advancing. Shown as Red semicircles point toward the cold air and blue triangles point toward the warm air.
Meteorologist Is a person who studies the weather.
Station Model Shows the weather conditions at a specific location on earths surface.
Isotherm A line that connects points of equal temperature.
Isobar Is a line drawn to connect points of equal atmospheric pressure.
