| Ecology | The study of the interactions between organisms and between organisms and their habitats. |
| The Biosphere | The part of the planet containing living organisms. |
| An Ecosystem | A group of clearly distinguished organisms that interact with their environment as a unit. |
| A Habitat | The place where a plant or organism lives. |
| A Population | All the members of the same species living in an area. |
| A Community | All the the different populations in an area. |
| Abiotic Factors | Non-living factors |
| Biotic Factors | Living Factors |
| Climatic Factors | Weather over a long period of time. |
| Edaphic Factors | Relate to soil: factors such as the soil pH, soil type and moisture, air and mineral content of the soil. |
| Producers | Organisms that carry out photosynthesis. |
| Consumers | Organisms that tale in food from another organism. |
| A Grazing Food Chain | A sequence of organisms in which each one is eaten by the next member in the chain. |
| A Trophic Level | A feeding stage in a food chain. |
| A Food Web | Two or more interlinked food chains. |
| A Pyramid of Numbers | Represents the number of organisms at each trophic level in a food chain. |
| An Ecological Niche of an Organism | The functional role that the organism plays in the community. |
| Nutrient Recycling | The way in which elements are exchanged between the living and non-living components of an ecosystem. |
| Nitrogen fixation | The conversion of of nitrogen gas into ammonia, ammonium or nitrate |
| Nitrification | The conversion of ammonia and ammonium compounds into nitrites and nitrates. |
| Denitrification | The conversion of nitrates into nitrogen gas. |
| Pollution | Any harmful addition to the environment |
| Pollutants | Substances that cause pollution |
| Conservation | The wise management of our existing natural resources, in order to maintain a wide range of habitats and prevent the the death and extinction of organisms. |
| Competition | Occurs when organisms actively struggle for a resource that is in short supply. |
| Intra-specific competition | Takes place between members of the same species. |
| Inter-specific | Occurs between members of different species. |
| Contest Competiton | An active physical contest between two individual organisms. |
| Scramble Competition | All the competing individuals get some of the resource. |
| Predation | The catching, killing and eating of another organism. |
| A predator | An organism that catches, kills and eats another organism. |
| Prey | The organism that is eaten by the predator. |
| Parasitism | When two organisms of different species live in close association and one organism obtains its food from, and to the disadvantage of, the second organism. |
| Symbiosis | When two organisms of different species live, and have to live, in close association and at least one of them benefits. |
| A qualitative study | Records the the presence or absence of something. |
| A quantitative study | Records the numbers or amounts that are present. |
| An Adaptation | Any alteration that improves an organism's chances of survival and reproduction. |
