TermDefinition
Antidiuretic hormone reduces urine flow by affecting reabsorption of water by kidney tubules
Adrenal cortex Exterior part of the adrenal gland
Afferent and efferent arterioles Arterioles that bring the blood in and out od the glomerulus
Aldosterone Controls salt and water balance in the kidney.
Bowman's capsule Thin double membrane surrounding the glomerulus of a nephron.
Collecting duct Duct where the urine is collected
Glomerulus A small intertwined group of capillaries in the malpighian body; glomeruli filter blood during urine formation.
Homeostasis The tendency of an organism or a cell to regulate its internal conditions, usually by a system of feedback controls
Hypothalamus a portion of the brain which lies beneath the thalamus and secretes substances which control metabolism by exerting an influence on pituitary gland function.
Kidneys The kidney function is to filter the blood and control the level of some chemicals in the blood such as hydrogen, sodium, potassium, and phosphate and they eliminate waste in the form of urine.
Loop of Henle a u-shaped turn in the medullary portion of a renal tubule
Metabolic waste Substances that the body needs to eliminate
Nephron Any of the small tubules that are the excretory units of the vertebrate kidney
Nitrogenous waste wastes (particularly urine) that contain materials high in nitrogen content.
Osmotic gradient differing particle concentrations on the two sides of the membrane
Peritubular capillary network tiny blood vessels that travel alongside nephrons allowing reabsorption and secretion between blood and the inner lumen of the nephron.
Posterior pituitary A small endocrine gland secreting hormones that regulate growth and metabolism
Pressure filtration Pressure causes small molecules to go through the a membrane
Proximal and distal convoluted tubules place where reabsorption and secretion happens.
Reabsorption of water Proteins make sodium ions cross the membrane and water follows them
Renal cortex The exterior part of the kidneys
Renal medulla The interior part of the kidneys
Renal pelvis The middle part of the kidneys
Selective Reabsorbtion Only nutrients that are required are able to pass
Tubular excretion Substances are removed from the blood and added to the tubular fluid.
Urea The final nitrogenous excretion product of many organisms.
Ureter The tube passing from each kidney to the bladder
Urethra The tube that conveys urine from the bladder to the outside.
Urinary bladder A musculomembranous elastic bag serving as a storage place for the urine.
Urine fluid excretion from the kidneys

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
