Chapter 7&8

QuestionAnswer
Self and non-self? Marker molecules on surface of cell which indentify if they are apart of the organism (self) or if they are foreign to the organism (non-self)
How does non-specific immunity differ from specific? Non-specific acts equally against any infective agent and a specific response acts only against specific infective agent.
Examples of first line of defense Intact skin, tears, cilava, mucous
Kinds of cells that form the second line of defense? Granulocytes, agranulocytes
What is a complement protein? Proteins that help or complement the ability of antibodies and phagocytic cells to clear pathogens from an organism.
Interferon and its role in the second line of defense? When pathogens are present and host cells release proteins in response, they allow for communication between cells to trigger the protective defenses of the immune system that eradicate pathogens or tumors.
What roles to cytokines play in immune system? They are proteins secreted by immune cells which act on other cells to coordinate appropriate immune responses. Some cytokines are chemical switches - turning certain immune cell types on and off.
Two main groups of cells involved in specific immunity and where do they mature? T and B cells. B cells produced and mature in bone marrow. T cells are produced in bone marrow but mature in thymus.
Role of protein markers on foreign cells? Protein markers play a role of helping the body identify the foreign cells as 'non-self' and so an immune response is implemented against it.
Immunoglobulin? where is it found? Antibody molecules, can be found in body fluids or on surface of B cells.
What are the cells produced by the cloning of B cells what are their function? Most cells produced are plasma cells which work to produce antibodies that are specific to the antigen which started the response of the B cell. The others differentiate into memory cells which long last and respond immediately to future invasions
Why is cloning of B cells imporatant in the immune response?

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
