LD BIO SKELETAL

LD BIO SKELETAL SYSTEM

TermDefinition
LOCOMOTION Ability to move from place to place. The interaction between the skeleton & muscles result in body movement. Organisms that do not move are sessile and organisms that move are mobile.
ADVANTAGES OF MOTILITY - Obtain food - Ability to disperse & migrate - Ability to seek shelter - Escape from predators - Find a mate increasing chances of survival of species
BONES Provide support & protect body organs, provide a place for muscle attachment, Ca & P make them hard.
LONG BONES In the leg and arms have ends covered with cartilage and are capable of growth. Have living blood, fat & bone cells.
PERIOSTEUM The outer covering is a tough membrane
MARROW Red and white blood cells produced in the inner tissue
CARTILAGE Soft bone. It is fibrous, flexible, elastic connective tissue that provides flexibility and cushioning between bones. Found in adults in nose, ears, trachea, end of ribs, between vertebrae.
HUMAN MUSCULAR SYSTEM Provides movement by pulling on bones when they contract.
INVOLUNTARY MUSCLES Happens automatically such as heart contractions (cardiac muscle) or peristalsis. Smooth muscle is found in the walls of arteries and organs.
VOLUNTARY MUSCLES Can be controlled such as skeletal (striated muscle) which are attached to your bones.
EXTENSOR Extends and straightens (ex: triceps)
FLEXOR Contract and bends the limb (ex: Bicep)
NERVOUS SYSTEM Both involuntary and voluntary muscle by sending nerve impulses to muscle causing them to contract.
GLYCOGEN Energy used to contract muscles is stored here
GLUCAGON Glycogen is converted to glucose by this and stored in the liver.
TENDONS Bands of dense tissue that connect muscle to bones.
LIGAMENTS Tough bands of tissue that hold bone together at joints. Connect bone to bone
FRACTURE Broken bones
SIMPLE FRACTURE Stay under the skin and can be closed
COMPOUND FRACTURE Stick out of the skin and can damage surrounding tissue
SPRAINS Tearing and stretching of ligaments. Caused by sudden twist or pull. Symptoms includes tenderness, swelling, bruising, inability to use joint.
HERNIA An organ or tissue sticks out through a weak area in the muscle or tissue that contains it such as the abdomen wall. Caused by weakness in the wall. Symptom is a bulge or pain.
ARTHRITIS Causes stiffness, swelling, soreness and pain. Cortisone & other medication can be treatment.
OSTEOARTHRITIS Results from wear & tear on cartilage at joints
RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS Causes swelling and pain at any age. Sometimes joints stiffen in deformed positions.
TENDONITIS Inflammation of a tendon causing pain after extensive use.
GOUT Uric acid deposits in the joints symptom pain.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
