LD BIO ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| ENDOCRINE SYSTEM | - Produces lots of hormones - Maintain internal stability - Hormones stimulate target tissue - Hormones are chemical substances |
| PINEAL GLANDS | May control biorhythms in some animals and control the onset of puberty in humans. Melatonin levels. |
| THYROID GLANDS | Stimulates metabolic rate and is essential to normal growth and development. Located in front of neck. |
| PITUITARY GLAND | Stimulates growth and stimulates secretion of hormones from other glands. Located at the base of brain. |
| OVARY | In females, stimulates development of secondary sex characteristics, stimulates growth of sex organs at puberty, and prompts monthly preparation of uterus for pregnancy. Produces estrogen & progesterone. |
| HYPOTHALAMUS | Major area where the nervous and endocrine systems interact. Center for homeostasis. |
| PANCREAS | Controls blood glucose levels and determine the fate of glycogen. Makes insulin. Located between kidneys |
| ADRENAL GLAND | Initiates stress responses, increases heart rate, blood pressure, and metabolic rate, dilates blood vessels, mobilizes fat and raises blood sugar levels. Helps immune system. Located on top of kidneys |
| THYMUS GLAND | Promotes production and maturation of white blood cells |
| TESTES | In male stimulates development of secondary sex characteristics, stimulates growth spurt at puberty, stimulates spermatogenesis. Produces testosterone. |
| PARATHYROID GLAND | Increases blood calcium level, stimulates calcium reabsorption and activates vitamin D. Located in Thyroid. |
| GROWTH HORMONE | Makes human bigger |
| THYROTROPHIC HORMONE | Strengthens esophagus |
| ADRENOCORTICOTROPHIC HORMONE | Makes adrenalin |
| GONADOTROPHIC HORMONE | Matures gonads |
| LACTOGENIC HORMONE | Breaks down milk |
| OXYTOCIN HORMONE | Controls O2 flow |
| VASOPRESSIN HORMONE | Controls the pressure in humans |
| ENDOCRINE GLANDS | Produce hormones. Also, known as ductless glands because they release their secretions directly into the bloodstream. |
| EXOCRINE GLANDS | Salivary, digestive & oil and sweat. |
| TWO MAJOR PARTS OF PITUITARY GLANDS | Anterior and intermediate lobes |
| GIANTISM | An overabundance of growth hormone during childhood |
| DWARFISM | A deficiency in growth hormone during childhood |
| GIANTISM | An overabundance of growth hormone in adults |
