QuestionAnswer
competition 2 populations needing the same resource in an ecosystem
deforestation cutting down large amounts of trees. Leads to increase carbon dioxide and increase in global climate change
acid rain rain that contains sulfur and other acid components that are released from factories (coal burning plants) into the atmosphere. The rain falls to the earth and kills trees and runs into lakes and kill plants an animals living in lakes
fossil fuels organic material deposited in the earth. Used in cars and heat, releasing carbon dioxide into the air which leads to global climate change.
biomass the total living mass in an ecosystem. Largest at the bottom of the energy pyramid and least at the top.
nitrogen fixation when bacteria turn nitrogen into a form that is usable by plants
energy pyramid representation of the levels of energy flowing through the ecosystem. Each level only passes 10 percent of the energy up to the next level
human population exponential growth curve, if it continues it will lead to few natural resources for future generations
mutualism a close relationship between 2 organism in which both organism benefit. ex clown fish and sea anenome
parasitism a close relationship between 2 organisms in which 1 organism benefits and the other is harmed. ex flea and dog
migration when animals travel long distances to mate and or find food
Carrying capacity the maximum number of animals that can live and reproduce in a particular area, the size to which the ecosystem can support
biomagnification increase in the amount of pollution as it moves up the food chain. example mercury in fish
nonnative species animals that are brought to an area where they have no natural predators. They disrupt the food chain and often cause the native species to become extinct by outcompeting them for food and resources
predator prey relationship between 2 animals where 1 animals hunts and kill the other. The graph of the 2 fluctuate with an increase in one causing a decrease in the other and vise versa
DNA fingerprinting a technique often used by forensic scientist to identify an criminal. The technique involve comparing to electrophoresis gels for similarities
transgenic bacteria when a bacterial plasmid has a human gene (or any other different species gene) inserted into it to make things like insulin and other medicine for gene therapy.
