cleavage the tendency to break along smooth, flat surfaces
crystal a solid in which the atoms are arranged in orderly, repeating patterns
density equal to an object's mass divided by the object's volume (g/cm3)
fracture the tendency to break along uneven surfaces
gemstone a rare and attractive mineral that can be worn as jewelry
hardness the resistance of a mineral to being scratched
inorganic not from biological origins (not alive, never was alive, never will be alive)
luster the way a mineral reflects or absorbs light at its surface (metallic/nonmetallic)
magma hot, melted rock below the earth's surface that cools to form crystals
mineral a naturally occurring, inorganic solid with a crystal structure and definite composition
Mohs Hardness Scale scale used to compare the hardness of various minerals ranging from hardness (10-diamond) to softest (1-talc)
native element minerals made of only one element (example iron and copper)
opaque a material that will not let light pass through
ore a rock or mineral that is mined for a profit (typically a metal)
organic from biological origins
oxides minerals containing oxygen and a metal
silicates minerals containing silicon and oxygen
streak the color of a mineral in powered form
translucent a material that lets light through, but not clearly
transparent a material that lets light through clearly (you can see an image through it)
