Evolution and Ecology Vocabulary to Study for the 4th quarter Exam.

| Genetics | The study of genes, heredity, and variation among living organisms. |
| Variation | Differences among individuals of the same population. |
| Adaptation | A characteristic that improves an individual's ability to survive and reproduce in a particular environment. |
| Natural Selection | The process by which individuals that are better adapted to their environment survive and reproduce more successfully than less well adapted individuals do. |
| Artificial Selection | The human practice of breeding animals or plants that have certain desired traits. |
| Extinction | The death of every member of a species. |
| Evolution | The process in which inherited characteristics within a population change over generations such that new species sometimes arise. |
| Mutualism | A relationship between two different species where both species benefit. |
| Parasitism | A relationship between two different species where one species benefits and the other is harmed. |
| Commensalism | A relationship between two different species where one species benefits and the other is neither helped nor harmed. |
| Predator | An organism that kills and eats all or part of another organism. |
| Prey | An organism that is killed and eaten by another organism. |
| Producer | An organism that can make its own food by using energy from its surroundings. |
| Consumer | An organism that eats other organisms. |
| Ecosystem | A community of organisms and their abiotic or non-living environment. |
| Population | A group of organisms of the same species that live in a specific geographic area. |
| Community | All of the populations of different species that live in the same habitat and interact with each other. |
| Individual | A single organism. |
| Habitat | The place where an organism usually lives |
| Abiotic factors | An environmental factor that is not associated with the activities of living organisms. (A non-living thing) |
| Biotic factors | An environmental factor that is associated with or results from the activities of living organisms. (a living thing) |
| Decomposer | An organism that gets energy by breaking down the remains of dead organisms and animal wastes and consuming or absorbing the nutrients. |
| Carnivores | An organism that eats animals. |
| Limiting factor | An environmental factor that prevents an organism or population from reaching its full potential of size or activity. |
| Species | A group of organisms that are closely related and can mate to produce fertile offspring. |
