cell The smallest unit that can perform all life processes and contains all of the materials necessary for life.
stimulus Anything in the environment that causes a response or change in an organism.
homeostasis The process of an organism maintaining a constant and stable internal state in a changing environment.
metabolism The total of all chemical activities that an organism performs.
proteins One of the five chemical building blocks of cells that are used to build cells and cellular structures.
amino acids The molecules that make up proteins.
carbohydrates One of the five chemical building blocks of cells that are used as a source of energy and for energy storage.
simple carbohydrate A carbohydrate made of one sugar molecule or a few linked sugar molecules.
complex carbohydrate A carbohydrate made of hundreds of sugar molecules linked together.
lipids One of the five chemical building blocks of cells that store energy and make up the cell membrane.
phospholipids A special type of lipid that forms much of the cell membrane.
ATP One of the five chemical building blocks of cells that the major energy-carrying molecules in the cell.
nucleic acids One of the five chemical building blocks of cells that carry the genetic information of an organism.
nucleotides The molecules that make up nucleic acids.
photosynthesis The process by which plants make their own food (sugar) from carbon dioxide, water, and energy from sunlight.
chlorophyll The green pigment in plants that absorbs light energy.
glucose The sugar produced during photosynthesis.
cellular respiration The process by which cells use oxygen to release energy from food.
cuticle A waxy coating that protects the plant from water loss.
stoma The opening in a leaf’s epidermis (outer layer) through which carbon dioxide and oxygen are exchanged.
guard cells The “double doors” that open and close a stoma for gas exchange.
transpiration The loss of water from the leaves of plants.
tropism Plant growth in response to a stimulus.
phototropism The process that occurs when plants grow towards light.
gravitropism The process that occurs when plants grow shoots away from gravity (upwards).
