| trace fossil | A footprint, track, or made by an organism and preserved in rock. |
| petrified fossil | A fossil that formed when the hard parts of an organism were replaced by minerals. |
| paleontologist | A geologist who specializes in fossils. |
| sediment | Bits of rock, soil, sand, shells, and the remains of organisms. |
