| ecosystem | all the living and non-living things in an area and their interactions |
| habitat | a place that provides all things an organism needs to live |
| biotic | all the living organisms in an ecosystem |
| abiotic | all the non-living organisms in an ecosystem |
| population | a group of organisms of one species that live in an area at the same time |
| community | different populations in an area make it up |
| niche | the role that an organism has in an ecosystem |
| carrying capacity | the number of organisms that can live in a habitat |
| preditor | an animal that hunts and eats another animal |
| prey | an animal that is hunted by others for food |
| producers | make their own food for energy |
| consumers | organisms that cannot make their own food |
| decomposers | organisms that get their energy by breaking down waste and dead organisms |
| herbivores | they eat only plants |
| omnivores | eat plants and animals |
| carnivores | eat only animals |
| scavengers | eat dead animals, but doesn't do the killing |
| parasite | an organism that lives inside or outside of an organism and hurts the organism |
| symbiosis | a long-term relationship between two different organisms |
| food chain | a series of steps by which energy moves from one type of living thing to another |
| food web | a diagram that combines many food changes into one picture |
