Who were Altan? A group from Donegal. Plays music from Donegal fiddle and song tradition (Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh), with a modern bouzouki (Ciaran Curran) and guitar backing (Mark Kelly)
Who were Clannad? Family group (Donegal)- Brennans and Duggans. Contempory arrangements of music. Harp, sometimes saxophone, synthesizer and Maire Brennans haunting voice are features.( 'Dulaman, Theme to Harrys Game, In a lifetime- duet with Bono)
Who are Afro Celt Sound System? A group that fuses trad with ethnic music. Trad elements- flute, pipes, tin whistle, bodhran, harp, accordian. African elements-rhythms used, kora)
Who are the Corrs? Group that fused trad and pop- Andreas pop voice, drums, keyboard guitar and trad elements bodhran and fiddle. Song examples 'Runaway' 'Forgiven not forgotten"
Who is Micheal O' Suilleabhain? Fuses trad with classical.Examples of pieces ' Oilean' a piece for orchestra with trad flute (Matt Molloy). Prof of music in UL. Plays piano and harpsichord.
Who is Bill Whelan? Composer of Riverdance. First performed in 1994 at Eurovision interval. Huge international success. Blends choral music (anuna) classical, ethnic, jazz and pop with trad music in a modern setting.
Briefly describe the structure of Riverdance? Begins with vocal section-female soloists with chamber choir, slip jig - bodhran, harp, fiddle, Earthrise 4/4-syncopation, build up of orchestra, final part- V. rhythmic, hard shoe dance, pipes, abrupt dramatic ending.
Who is Shaun Davey? Composer, fused trad with classical. Ex The Brendan Voyage'. Orchestral piece with uilleann pipes (Liam O Flynn). Pipes represent the boat St Brendan travelled on from Kerry to Newfoundland.
What is Gael Linn? Organisation that promotes trad and Irish language. Founded in 1953. Made an important contribution to the recording of trad. Responsibe for bringing the music of 'Mise Eire' by Sean O' Riada to national attention. Used to run 'Slogadh' competition also.
