Evolution Part 1

TermDefinition
sexual reproduction A process that creates a new organism by combining the genetic material of two organisms. It occurs in eukaryotes.
Natural selection the gradual process by which biological traits become either more or less common in a population as a function of the effect of inherited traits on the differential reproductive success of organisms interacting with their environment.
Genetic variability a change or difference in condition, amount, or level, typically with certain limits. "regional variations in house prices"
phylogeny study of evolutionary relationships among groups of organisms
phylogenetic tree visual representation showing the inferred evolutionary relationships among various biological species or other entities
Genetic drift The change in the frequency of a gene variant in a population due to random sampling.
extinction dying out or termination of a species
Gene flow The transfer of alleles or genes from one population to another.
Fitness an organism's ability to survive and reproduce in a particular environment.
gradual extinction Where a species starts to die out slowly
Hardy-Weinberg Principle When an allele and genotype frequencies in a population will remain constant from generation to generation in the absence of other evolutionary influences.
Biochemistry the branch of science concerned with the chemical and physicochemical processes that occur within living organisms.
Carl Linnaeus was a Swedish botanist, physician, and zoologist, who laid the foundations for the modern biological naming scheme of binomial nomenclature.
paleontology the branch of science concerned with fossil animals and plants.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
