Ch 13 Biology

TermDefinition
Ecology The study of interactions among living things, and between living things and their surroundings.
Community A group of different species that live together in one area.
Ecosystem Includes all of the organisms as well as the climate, soil, water, rocks and other nonliving things in a given area.
Biome A major regional or global community of organisms.
Biotic Living things, such as plants, animals, fungi, and bacteria.
Abiotic Nonliving things such as moisture, temperature, wind, sunlight and soil.
Biodiversity Assortment, or variety, of living things in an ecosystem.
Keystone Species A species that has an unusually large effect on its ecosystem.
Producer Organisms that get their energy from nonliving resources.
Autotroph Another name for producers.
Consumer Organisms that get their energy by eating other living or once-living organisms.
Heterotroph Another name for consumers.
Chemosynthesis The process by which an organism forms carbohydrates using chemicals, rather than light, as an energy source.
Food Chain A model that shows the complex network of feeding relationships and the flow of energy within and sometimes beyond an ecosystem.
Herbivore Organisms that eat only plants.
Carnivore Organisms that eat only animals.
Omnivore Organisms that eat both plants and animals.
Decomposer Detritivores that break down organic matter into simpler compounds.
Detritivore Organisms that eat detritus, or dead organic matter.
Specialist A consumer that primarily eats one specific organism or feeds on a very small number of organisms.
Generalist Organisms that get their energy by eating other living or once-living resources, such as plants and animals .
Trophic Level Levels of nourishment in a food chain.
Food Web A model that shows the complex network of feeding relationships and the flow of energy within and sometimes beyond an ecosystem.
Hydrologic Cycle Also known as the water cycle, it is the circular pathway of water on Earth from the atmosphere to the surface, below ground and back.
Biogeochemical The movement of a particular chemical through the biological and geological, or living and nonliving parts of an ecosystem.
Nitrogen Fixation Process of converting nitrogen gas into ammonia by certain types of bacteria.
Biomass Measure of the total dry mass of organisms in a given area.
Energy Pyramid Illustrates the energy flow between trophic levels in an ecosystem.
