Why do plants and soil need each other? Soil: Plants need to be more fertile and to keep roots in place. Plants: gives minerals and water.
Soil+Goldilocks. Why? needs a proper balance of sand, silt, and clay to make fertile soil.
What is bedrock? Rocks underneath the horizons.
At the beginning of the fall, you see leaves on the forest floor. You go back and the leaves are gone? What happened? Decomposition
What condition does the freeze-thaw cycle happen? cold, dry locations
What condition does wave motion happen? on a beach/ocean
What condition does biological weathering occur? near plants, forests
What condition does chemical weathering happen? warm, wet locations
Define Freeze- Thaw cycle. In the freeze thaw cycle, water gets into cracks, freezes, melts, and then re-freezes and keeps expanding until the ground cracks.
Define Wave Motion. The waves crash down on the sand and make little ripples that chip away at the rocks.
Define Biological Weathering. living organisims cause weathering to occur.
Define Chemical Weathering. the weathering of rocks caused my chemicals like rain or wind.
What has the biggest particle size? Medium? Smallest? Clay: Smallest Sand: Biggest Silt: Medium
What decides the type of soil we have? Plants growing there, bedrock, and climate.
Why is soil valuable? -farming -root holder
How can soil be degraded? 1. overuse 2. over farming 3. deforestation 4. wind erosion
Which continent has the worst soil? Best? Worst- Europe Best- North America
Soil conservation- what are 5 ways we can conserve soil? 1. crop rotation 2. contour farming 3. wind breaking 4. tillage 5. contour terracing
How do sand and clay effect water drainage? Sand- water gets through. Clay- no water gets through.
What are 2 types of weathering? PICK 2: Biological, Mechanical, Chemical, Freeze-Thaw, wave motion
