Living Things

QuestionAnswer
Biosphere The layer around Earth that supports life
Ecosystem All of the living & nonliving things in an area.
Ecology The study of interactions that occur between living things and their environments.
Population A group of organisms of the same species
Community All of the populations of living things in an ecosystem.
Habitat A place where an organism lives.
Trap-Mark-Release A way of counting populations so that the same organism isn't counted twice.
Sample Counts A estimate of a larger population.
Limiting Factors Anything that restricts a population's size.
Carrying Capacity The largest number of individuals that an ecosystem can support.
Biotic Potential The highest rate of reproduction in a species under ideal conditions.
Exponential Growth The larger a population gets, the faster it will grow.
Producers Organisms that make their own energy-rich molecules.
Consumers Organisms that must obtain their energy from other living things
Photosynthesis When producers use the sun's energy to make their own food.
Chemosynthesis When producers on the ocean floor use chemicals from volcanic vents to make their own food.
Food Chains A model of the feeding relationships in an ecosystem.
Symbiosis Any close relationship between two species.
Mutualism When both organisms benefit from a relationship
Commensalism When one organism in a relationship benefits while the other is unaffected.
Parasitism When one organism in a relationship benefits while the other gets harmed.
Niche An organism's role in its environment (its job)
