| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| ecology | the study of the interaction between organism and their environment |
| population | a group of individuals of a particular species in habiting a given area |
| community | all the population of different organisms in an area |
| ecosystem | a community of their environment function as the ecological unit |
| biome | a major type of terrestrial ecosystem having certain temperatures range, rainfall amounts, and vegetation |
| biosphere | the global ecosystem; all the ecosystem of earth grouped together |
| abiotic factor | a nonliving chemical or physical component that affects the environment |
| orographic effect | precipitation caused by clouds gaining altitudes as they move upward over a mountain range |
| rain shadow | an area on one side of a mountain range that receives low precipitation due to the orographic effect |
| polar ice | a biome that is permanently covered in snow and ice year round |
| arctic tundra | a biome found near the poles, characterizes by permanently frozen subsoil and few trees |
| permafrost | permanently frozen subsoil, found in arctic and alpine tundra |
| alpine tundra | a biome found near mountain tops, characterized by plant communities similar to those of arctic tundra |
| taiga | a forested biome found to the south of the arctic tundra and in lower altitude mountainous regions, characterized by conifer trees and thin arctic soil |
| conifer | a tree that produces cones, such as pines , firs, and redwoods |
| temperate deciduous forest | a forested biome found in mid-altitudes, characterized by trees that lose their leaves in winter |
| temperate grassland | a grassy biome found in temperature latitudes, characterized by seasonal drought that prevents the growth of trees |
| charral | a biome characterized by ever green shrubs adapted to hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters |
| desert | a biome that receives less than 12 inches of rainfall each year |
| savanna | a grassland biome found in warmer areas that receive most of their rainfall during a rainy season |
| tropical forest | a forested biome founded near the equator, characterized by constant high temperatures and more than 60 inches of rainfall each year |
| lake | large body of fresh water |
| phytoplankton | very small or microscopic photosynthetic organisms that live near the surface of water |
| river | natural stream of water |
| wetland | a freshwater biome that is saturated with moisture |
| estuary | a biome found at the mouth of a river where salt water and fresh water meet |
| intertidal zone | the seashore region between high and low tides |
| coral reef | a marine biome composed of invertebrate animals associated with photosynthetic algae and covered by a calcium carbonate shell |
| benthetic zone | the bottom of the ocean |
| abyssal zone | the deepest benthetic zone where the water is very cold and there is no light |
| hydrothermal vent | a geyser on the ocean floor |
| chemoautotroph | a bacterium that can synthesize organic compounds without natural light |
| population ecology | the study of the interactions of a population and its environment |
| clumped distribution | a pattern of distribution within a population in which individuals are grouped together |
| uniform distribution | a pattern of distribution within a population in which the spacing of individuals is regular |
| random distribution | a pattern of distribution within a population which the spacing of individuals is random |
| population density | the number of individuals of a population unit are D=M/V |
| demographic | the statistical characteristics of a population |
| generation time | the average time from the birth of an individual to the birth of its offspring |
| life table | a data table used to determine the length of time that individuals in a population are expected to survive |
| cohort | a group of individuals in a population that are the same age |
| survivorship curve | a graph of data from a life table |
| age pyramid | a graphical representation of the population of a population in each cohort |
| carrying capacity | the number of individuals an environment can support over a period of time |
| exponential growth curve | a graph showing the growth of a population where there are no constraints on growth |
